St. Gerard Roman Catholic Church, The Valley

St. Gerard in Anguilla is a young parish in age and membership. Records of the first organized Catholic community on this Caribbean island date back to 1948. That small community of a dozen or so built a small chapel and rectory. In 1961, a hurricane damaged the chapel and destroyed the rectory.

Not to be deterred, parishioners found another place to gather. Marie Lake, the last surviving heiress of the Wallblake Estate, had donated her house and land to the Church a couple years earlier. The Catholic congregation met at the Wallblake House until 1966 when a new church was built.

The first Divine Word Missionary arrived on the island in 1984. Today, registered parishioners number more than 300 with one-third being under age 20. The parish is alive with religious education classes, St. Vincent de Paul meetings, choir practices, youth group activities, a group who visits the house bound and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
